Uses Of Would
- Used for expressing preferences or choices. Word 'Rather' is also used for these sentences.
Example- I would rather take tea than coffee.
- If the beginning clause is in the past, then the next clause must be in the same clause. Here would is used instead of will.
Example- I said that he would not dance here.
- It can also be used to express routine action in place of 'Used to' or 'Simple present tense'.
Example-
I used to go to school by bus. I would return on foot.
We played for hours.
- It is used in conditional sentences.
Example-
If I were a bird, I would fly.
- It is used as a past form of will in Indirect Speech.
Example-
Rohan said to him, "You will work hard".
(Direct)
Rohan told him that he would work hard. (Indirect)
- It is used for polite requests.

Example-
Would you please give me a glass of water?
- It is used to express probability.
Example- He would be dancing.
- It is used to express wishes.
Example-
I wish you would become a graduate.
- "Would like to" is also used to express wishes.
