Spoken English Grammar: Usage of Would

When it comes to learn a foreign language, it becomes a daunting task for most of the learners, especially for them whose mother languages are different. They look for translating it into English from their mother language. Later, they find this way not up to the mark.

We suggest you here to learn situational english rather than translating. In this approach, we here teach you some of the crucial concepts of english.

Today, it's time to learn the Uses Of Would.

Uses Of Would

  •  Used  for expressing preferences or choices. Word 'Rather' is also used for these sentences.

Example- I would rather take tea than                              coffee.

  •    If the beginning clause is in the past, then the next clause must be in the same clause. Here would is used instead of will.

Example- I said that he would not dance                          here.
  •   It can also be used to express routine action in place of 'Used to' or 'Simple present tense'.
        Example-
I used to go to school by bus.                               I would return on foot.
           We played for hours.

  • It is used in conditional sentences.

     Example-
If I were a bird, I would fly.
  •   It is used as a past form of will in        Indirect Speech.

     Example-
Rohan said to him, "You will work hard".
(Direct)
Rohan told him that he would work hard.    (Indirect)

  •   It is used for polite requests.

     Example-
Would you please give me a glass of water?
  •  It is used to express probability.

      Example- He would be dancing.

  •   It is used to express wishes.

      Example-
I wish you would become a graduate.

  •   "Would like to" is also used to                             express wishes.

Example- He would like to dance.

These were the usage of would which we must never ignore. I hope you learnt something new from this article.
